Glutathione

Glutathione
Glutathione is an endogenous antioxidant tripeptide studied for its role in cellular redox defence, oxidative-stress responses, and antioxidant systems. Researchers use glutathione to examine cellular defence pathways, redox balance, and oxidative-stress mechanisms because it serves as a major intracellular antioxidant.

Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide made up of L-γ-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine. It exhibits a variety of biological activities, including scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, participating in glutathione-dependent conjugation of electrophiles and xenobiotic compounds, and preserving cellular redox balance.
There are two forms of glutathione: reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG). The ratio of these forms is a crucial measure of the oxidative state of cells. The peptide works by directly scavenging reactive oxygen species, conjugating harmful substances for removal, and regenerating additional antioxidants such as vitamins C and E.
Research applications include:
- Redox-related physiological and disease-associated research models
- Oxidative stress mechanisms
- Cellular protection pathways
- Antioxidant biology
- Various physiological and pathological processes
